[1.13. ΠΩΣ ΔΕΙ ΚΟΛΠΟΥΣ ΕΠΑΙΝΕΙΝ]

1. Ἐν τούτῳ δὲ καὶ τὸ περὶ τῶν κόλπων. κόλπους ἐπαινέσεις εἰς μέγεθος καὶ κάλλος καὶ εὐρυθμίαν καὶ εἰς εὐλιμενότητα καὶ πολυλιμενότητα.

1. Ἐν τούτῳ δὲ καὶ τὸ περὶ τῶν ἀκροπόλεων· αἱ μὲν ἐν μέσῳ πόλεών εἰσιν, αἱ δ’ ἐν πλαγίῳ. καὶ αἱ μὲν ὑψηλαί, στεναὶ δὲ τὸ ἄνω δάπεδον, αἱ δὲ βραχεῖαι μέν, εὐρύχωροι δέ· καὶ αἱ μὲν εὔυδροι, αἱ δὲ ἄνυδροι· καὶ αἱ μὲν ἀνώμαλοι τὰς κορυφάς, αἱ δὲ πεδινώτεραι. ἥτις μὲν οὖν τὰς μὲν ἀρετὰς εἴληφεν τὰς δὲ κακίας ἐκπέφευγεν, αὕτη καλλίστη, ὅμως δ’ ἐξ ὧν ἐπαινετέον τούτων ἑκάστην λεκτέον.

2. Ἂν μὲν τοίνυν ἐν πλαγίῳ τῆς πόλεως ᾖ, ὅτι ἀκριβῶς κεφάλῃ1 ἔοικε· μετὰ γὰρ πᾶν τὸ σῶμα κεῖται. εἰ δ’ ἐν μέσῳ, ὅτι περὶ αὐτὴν ἡ πόλις ἵδρυται, ὥσπερ

1. In this section also belongs the treatment of gulfs. You should praise gulfs for their size, beauty, fine proportions, and good and plentiful harbors.

1. In this section also belongs the treatment of acropoleis. Some are in the middle of cities, some on one side. Some are lofty and have narrow summits, others are low and spacious; some have abundant water, others have none; some are uneven on top, others more level. The one then that lays claim to the virtues and avoids the drawbacks is the best. Nevertheless, we must discuss how to praise each type of acropolis.

2. Thus, if it is on the side of the city, say that it is just like a head, because it lies beyond the entire body;1 if it is in the middle, that the city is built around it like royal
