Melanippides

3 Marcellinus, Life of Thucydides

According to Praxiphanes1 in his work On History Thucydides2 was a contemporary of the comic poet Plato, the tragedian Agathon, the epic poet Niceratus and Choerilus and Melanippides.

Musical Innovations

4 Aristotle, Rhetoric

Similarly, a long period turns into a speech in itself, like an aria,1 and the result is what Demetrius of Chios2 spoke of in his jibe at Melanippides who composed arias instead of antistrophes: ‘a man does evil to himself who does evil to another, and the long aria is the greatest evil to its composer.’

5 ‘Plutarch’, On Music

For Aristoxenus On Music Book 1 says that Olympus was the first to use the Lydian mode, when he played on his pipes a lament for the Python.1 Some say it was Melanippides who originated this song.2
