περὶ μὲν γὰρ αὐλῶν ὁ μέν τις ἔφη τὸν Μελανιππίδην καλῶς ἐν τῷ Μαρσύᾳ διασύροντα τὴν αὐλητικὴν εἰρηκέναι περὶ τῆς Ἀθηνᾶς·

ἁ μὲν Ἀθάνα τὤργαν᾿ ἔρριψέν θ᾿ ἱερᾶς ἀπὸ χειρὸς εἶπέ τ᾿· ἔρρετ᾿ αἴσχεα, σώματι λύμα· ὔμμε δ᾿ ἐγὼ κακότατι δίδωμι.

On the subject of pipes one guest noted that Melanippides in his splendid ridicule of pipe-playing in the Marsyas said of Athena,

Athena flung the instruments from her holy hand and said, ‘Away with you, you shameful objects, outrage to the body!1 I consign you to ruination.’2
