VIII 234 Littré1. (110 L.) Ῥόος λευκὸς ἐν τῇσι γεραιτέρῃσι τῶν γυναικῶν μᾶλλον γίνεται ἢ ἐν τῇσι νεωτέρῃσι· ῥόος πυρρὸς ἐν ἀμφοτέρῃσι· ῥόος ἐρυθρὸς ἐν τῇσι νεωτέρῃσιν.

Ῥόος ἐρυθρὸς γίνεται ἐκ πυρετῶν, μᾶλλον δ’ ἐκ τρωσμοῦ· γίνεται δὲ καὶ ἐξ ἀπολήψιος ἐπιμηνίων, ὁπόταν ἀποκλεισθέντα ἐξαπίνης καταρραγῇ· γίνεται δὲ καὶ ἐκ τόκων.1 αἷμα ῥεῖ πάμπολυ, καὶ θρόμβοι ἐκπίπτουσι, καὶ ὀδύνη ἐγγίνεται τῶν κληΐδων καὶ τῶν τενόντων, καὶ νάρκη σώματος2 ἀπόψυξίς τε τῶν σκελέων· ἐνίοτε δὲ καὶ ἤρεισε τοὺς ὀδόντας. ἢν πλέον ᾖτὸ αἷμα τὸ ἀπιόν, καὶ ἄναυδοι γίνονται,3 ἱδρώς τε καταχεῖται πολύς. πρὸς δὲ τούτων καρδιωγμοί τε γίνονται, καὶ περιψύξιες, καὶ πυρετοὶ ἀκρητόχολοι καὶ ἀλυσμώδεες· καὶ τῆς αὐτῆς ἡμέρης πολλάκις ῥιγεῦσι, καὶ αὖτις ἱδρώς,4 καὶ ἄλλοτε ἀπὸ τῶν ἄνω χωρίων σπασμοὶ σφίσι γίνονται, καὶ ἄλλοτε ἀπὸ τῶν κάτω, καὶ ἐς τοὺς βουβῶνας ὀδύναι σφίσιν ἐμπίπτουσιν ὀξεῖαί τε καὶ ἰσχυραί, φοιτῶσαι ὥσπερ ὠδῖνες· ἐνίοτε

1. A white flux is more likely to occur in older women than in younger ones, a flame-colored flux occurs in both, and a red flux is commoner in younger women.

A red flux arises from fevers—even more from an abortion—but it can also arise after a stoppage of the menses, when after being held back they suddenly break out downward; it also comes after childbirth. Blood flows copiously, clots are expelled, and pain is present in the collarbones and the tendons there; there is numbness of the body with coldness of the legs, and sometimes the patient also grinds her teeth. If the amount of blood passing is quite great, speech is lost and much sweat is secreted. From these (sc. conditions) there are also heartburn, chills, fevers accompanied by bilious vomiting, and restlessness; on the same day patients often have chills followed by sweating, and at one time convulsions arising from their upper parts, but at another time from their lower parts; pains which are acute and violent befall their groins, intermitting like birth pangs. Sometimes there is also strangury. The mouth is
