BOOK I

ΤΑ ΤΩΝ ΧΡΙΣΤΙΑΝΩΝ ΕΠΙΓΡΑΜΜΑΤΑ

τὰ τῶν Χριστιανῶν προτετάχθω εὐσεβῆ τε καὶ θεῖα ἐπιγράμματα κἂν οἱ Ἕλληνες ἀπαρέσκωνται.

1 Εἰς τὸ κιβούριον τῆς ἁγίας Σοφίας

Ἃς οἱ πλάνοι καθεῖλον ἐνθάδ᾽ εἰκόνας ἄνακτες ἐστήλωσαν εὐσεβεῖς πάλιν.

2 Ἐν ταῖς ἁψῖσι τῶν Βλαχερνῶν

Θεῖος Ἰουστῖνος, Σοφίης πόσις, ᾧ πόρε Χριστὸς πάντα διορθοῦσθαι καὶ κλέος ἐν πολέμοις, μητρὸς ἀπειρογάμοιο δόμον σκάζοντα νοήσας, σαθρὸν ἀποσκεδάσας τεῦξέ μιν ἀσφαλέως.

CHRISTIAN EPIGRAMS

Let the pious and godly Christian epigrams come first, even if the pagans are displeased.

1 On the dome of the Hagia Sophia¹

The images that the heretics took down from here our pious sovereigns replaced.²

2 On the apse of Blachernae

The divine Justin,¹ the husband of Sophia, to whom Christ granted to restore order to everything, and glory in war, finding that the house of the virgin Mother was tottering, demolished the unsound part and rebuilt it securely.

¹ In fact, part of the inscription may still be found there on the apse semidome (Cameron, The Greek Anthology, 150).

² The images were restored by Basil I, emperor 867–886, and his predecessor, Michael III (Cameron, The Greek Anthology, 151).
