139 M. AEMILIUS SCAURUS FILIUS

M. Aemilius Scaurus (praet. 56 BC; RE Aemilius 141), a son of M. Aemilius Scaurus (43), administered the province of Sardinia after his praetorship. Upon his return he was prosecuted for extortion by P. Valerius Triarius (148 F 1–2); defended by six advocates, including Cicero (Cic. Scaur.) as well as himself (F 5), he was acquitted (TLRR

F 1 Cic. Verr. 2.1.97

Against Cn. Cornelius Dolabella (F 1–3)

Scaurus successfully prosecuted Cn. Cornelius Dolabella (praet. 81 BC) when the latter returned from the governorship of Cilicia (80–79 BC), where C. Verres had been among his staff (TLRR 135).

F 1 Cicero, Verrine Orations

Therefore M. Scaurus, who prosecuted Cn. Dolabella, kept that man [C. Verres] in his power and under his control. Being a young man, when in the course of his inquiries he had discovered that man’s numerous thefts and evil deeds, he acted ingeniously and skillfully: he showed him a very large book full of his exploits; he extracted from the man what he wanted against Dolabella; he called him as a witness; that man [Verres] said what he supposed the prosecutor wished.
