ἈΝΝΙΒΑΙΚΗ1

1. Ὅσα δὲ Ἀννίβας ὁ Καρχηδόνιος ἐξ Ἰβηρίας ἐς Ἰταλίαν ἐσβαλὼν ἑκκαίδεκα ἔτεσιν, οἷς ἐπέμεινε πολεμῶν, ἔδρασέν τε καὶ ἔπαθεν ὑπὸ Ῥωμαίων, ἕως αὐτὸν Καρχηδόνιοί τε κινδυνεύοντες περὶ τῇ πόλει ἐπὶ τὰ σφέτερα μετεπέμψαντο καὶ Ῥωμαῖοι τῆς Ἰταλίας ἐξήλασαν, ἥδε ἡ γραφὴ δηλοῖ. 2ἥ τις δὲ τῷ Ἀννίβᾳ γέγονε τῆς ἐσβολῆς αἰτία τε ἀληθὴς καὶ πρόφασις ἐς τὸ φανερόν, ἀκριβέστατα μὲν ἐν τῇ Ἰβηρικῇ συγγραφῇ δεδήλωται, συγγράψω δὲ καὶ νῦν ὅσον εἰς ἀνάμνησιν.

2. 3Ἀμίλχαρ, ᾧ Βάρκας ἐπίκλησις ἦν, Ἀννίβου τοῦδε πατήρ, ἐστρατήγει Καρχηδονίων ἐν Σικελίᾳ, ὅτε Ῥωμαῖοι καὶ Καρχηδόνιοι περὶ αὐτῆς ἀλλήλοις ἐπολέμουν. δόξας δὲ πρᾶξαι κακῶς ὑπὸ τῶν ἐχθρῶν ἐδιώκετο καὶ δεδιὼς ἔπραξεν ἐς τοὺς Νομάδας αἱρεθῆναι στρατηγὸς πρὸ τῶν εὐθυνῶν. 4γενόμενος δὲ χρήσιμος ἐν τῷδε καὶ τὴν στρατιὰν θεραπεύσας ἁρπαγαῖς καὶ δωρεαῖς ἤγαγεν ἄνευ τοῦ κοινοῦ Καρχηδονίων

THE HANNIBALIC BOOK

1. This book sets out all that Hannibal the Carthaginian did to, and experienced at the hands of, the Romans in the sixteen years during which he remained at war against them, from the time when he invaded Italy from Iberia, until the Carthaginians, with Carthage itself in danger, recalled him to protect their own interests, and the Romans expelled him from Italy. 2I have explained in great detail in the Iberian book1 what Hannibal’s real reason was for the invasion, and the pretext he presented publicly, but I will describe them again here in enough detail to remind the reader.

2. 3Hamilcar, who had the surname Barca, father of our Hannibal, was in command of the Carthaginian forces in Sicily, when Rome and Carthage were at war with each other over it. Believed by his enemies to have performed badly, he was indicted, but fearing the outcome, got himself appointed commander against the Numidians before he was audited. 4He performed well in this role, and having courted the army’s favor with plunder and gifts, he led it
