v The first version of Clouds was produced at the City Dionysia in the archonship of Isarchus [424/3], when Cratinus won with Wine-Flask, then Ameipsias with Konnos.
vi [Birds] was performed at the Dionysia in the archonship of Charias [415/4] through Callistratus. Aristophanes was second with Birds. Ameipsias was victorious with his Revellers, Phrynichus third with his Hermit.
vii (XANTHIAS) So why did I have to carry this baggage if I won’t be doing any of the jokes that Phrynichus is used to doing, and Lycis and Ameipsias, people carrying baggage in every comedy?
viii And you people don’t even notice a beggar Ameipsias among you?1
- 1Meineke, followed by K.-A., read the name as “Amynias,” the pseudoploutos at Wasps 1267–74. The MS tradition is divided between “you” and “us.”
