GENERAL INTRODUCTION
Against Clodius and Curio (no. 14), another speech circulated by others, rather than by Cicero himself. The sources have been examined afresh, and newer source editions substituted where appropriate. Apart from the items listed in the previous section, the revision of the chronology of the speeches, and the rearrangement of testimonia in chronological order, the major changes from 1994 can be summarized as follows (most involve elimination of matter which, though providing background information, is not strictly a testimonium for the speech itself; an exception is 5–6 T 11, where Asconius’ full introduction is essential to interpreting the fragments):
- 1. No. 4: “On Behalf of [Pro] C. Manilius” is eliminated as a possible title.
- 2. Nos. 5–6: new testimonia T 13, 14, 23, and 24 are added; T 19 becomes 6 F 9b; T 22 is eliminated; *6 F 4 becomes 5 F 49; new fragments 5 F 51 and 6 F 9a are added (the latter = T 21.83 in Crawford 1994).
- 3. No. 7: the earlier attested title, On King Ptolemy, is substituted for On the Alexandrian King; of the “uncertain testimonies” (testimonia incerta), 1 is eliminated; 2 becomes T 4; 3 becomes *T 1.
- 4. On Behalf of C. Fundanius is redated to the second half of 65 or the first half of 64 (see introduction to that speech) and thus becomes no. 8.
- 5. The order of the speeches On Behalf of Q. Gallius and In a White Toga is reversed in view of the chronological indication at 10 T 3 (see the introduction to no. 10).
- 6. No. 9: previous T 5 is eliminated (= FRLO 112 F 2

- and 113 F 1A) and replaced with new content; new F 14 and 17 are added.
- 7. No. 10: previous T 4 and F 7 are eliminated as dependent on T 2 and F 6 (Brut. 277–78); T 4 is added.
- 8. The order of On the Sons of the Proscribed and On Otho is reversed, to match the list at Att. 2.1[21].3.
- 9. No. 11: the title cited by Cicero, On Otho, is used; there is a new interpretation of the background, after Ramsey 2021.
- 10. No. 12: T 4 is eliminated.
- 11. No. 13: new fragment **F 2 is added.
- 12. No. 14: previous T 1 and 8 are reduced in scope; T 2 and 6 are eliminated; F 6b is eliminated.
- 13. No. 15: T 1 and 2 are eliminated; T 3 is reduced in scope.
Concordances at the end indicate all changes that have been made in the inclusion and ordering of the fragments vis-à-vis the 1994 edition and the other commonly used editions of Schoell and Puccioni.49
A NOTE ON THE TRANSLATION
A fresh translation has been prepared for this volume, for which some help has been obtained from previous Loeb translations, with thanks to the respective authors. The aim has been to capture the sense of the Latin in idiomatic English that can be read as an independent text but remains in recognizable contact with the Latin version on the facing page for readers who wish to compare.
